Boat insurance provider Saga has launched a new guide to help sailing enthusiasts avoid falling victim to crime.
The free 24-page Guide to Protecting Your Boat is available online and has been issued by the company in the wake of a raft of boat insurance claims resulting from an increase in marine crime across the UK.
Among the areas covered by the boat insurance company's guide are useful tips to protect your belongings with security devices and precautions, plus advice on what to do if your boat is stolen and you are forced to submit a boat insurance claim. Further assistance is provided to boat owners on the best approach to buying a new or second-hand boat, maintenance of a vessel and safety issues and selling a boat.
A statement from Saga, which provides a range of other cover as well as boat insurance, reads: "As well as being at risk of crime, moored boats can also fall victim to floods or high winds that can carry a boat away from its moorings or cause serious damage. The guide includes recommendations to prevent such issues for boats moored in marinas and riverbanks."
The launch of the guide comes as nine outboard motors with a total value of £90,000 were recently stolen from a stretch of river in Stutton over a seven day period. The thefts are currently being investigated by local police forensic teams as well as the victims' boat insurance companies.
