One in four UK car accidents each year are minor rear-end bumps and these are on the increase despite the overall number of UK car accidents declining. However, not all car insurance claims as a result of a back-end collision are genunine, as fraudsters take advantage of this 'easy' way to claim.
There are 420,000 rear-end crashes each year - which equates to one in four of all UK accidents - as drivers attempt to negotiate increasingly busy and roadwork heavy areas. Sue Lonthorn, Managing Director of Admiral, says:
However, not all of these bumps are due to traffic frustration. The number of fraudulent rear-end bumps are on the rise, as they are the easiest accidents to stage. Fraudsters will pull away from slow or stopped traffic then break suddenly with no warning, causing the car behind to hit their rear - and will then make a claim for the car damage and whiplash.
It's important to stay alert and be on the lookout, keeping a safe distance from the car in front at all times - it is the honest driver who ends up paying, as fraudulent claims raise the cost of premiums across the board.
