Caravaners looking forward to their next getaway in their mobile home need to check the limits on their caravan insurance prior to setting off, the ABI has reminded. Latest figures from the Caravan Club show that taking a caravanning holiday is becoming more popular with Britons, with membership to the association increasing by 57,000 people in the last year alone. This is both clear indication of the attraction of holidays of this type and an even greater reminder about the necessity of taking out adequate caravan insurance cover to protect against any eventuality.
While the contents of a caravan will be covered by a home contents insurance policy when the vehicle is static, the ABI states that owners must take steps to scrutinise their caravan insurance policy to ensure their limits for individual expensive items. "When your caravan is in situ at the caravan site or outside your home, then the contents of the caravan would be covered by your home contents insurance, and when you're driving the caravan somewhere, then liability is covered on your motor insurance," a spokesperson for the association said. "For the actual shell of the caravan, regardless of whether it's being towed or whether it's [staying put] somewhere, that is specialist caravan insurance," she explained. "Check your caravan insurance policy limits for individual items and, if you're taking stuff away that is more expensive than your policy limits, then get it listed - on either your specialist caravan insurance policy or your home insurance policy."
Caravan insurance policies can vary from insurer to insurer depending on a host of different factors. Industry experts advise motorists to search online in the first instance for the most relevant, good value caravan insurance policy.
