With the economy tightening its clutches on individuals and households the world over, countless Brits are opting to holiday in the UK instead of journeying abroad this summer. However, insurance specialists are warning holidaymakers that it's more important than ever to secure adequate insurance - even if you don't plan to go very far.
Insurers are also urging would-be travellers to ensure their protection policy covers the type of trip they plan to take. For instance, many Brits are likely to rent motor homes and caravans for UK-based holidays this summer. But specialist over-50s insurance provider Saga has reminded consumers that motor homes and caravans are not always covered by standard home or car insurance policies. While caravans attached to the back of a vehicle can sometimes qualify for third party insurance protection in line with a given car insurance policy, theft or damage is not likely to be covered. In other instances, attached caravans will not even qualify for third party insurance cover.
Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of the Saga Group, said that dedicated caravan insurance is just as vital as car breakdown cover, as holiday vehicles often tend to contain a higher-than-average number of items - many of them expensive, such as camping or sporting equipment. Goodsell said:
"It is important that caravan owners fully understand what their insurance policies cover."
"Separate caravan insurance is vital when using your caravan, and ensures that even if the holiday takes a turn for the worst, you won't be left out of pocket."
Some insurers offer a policy add-on feature for caravan trips, so it's always worth asking if this feature is available, rather than assuming you're covered.
Saga's advice follows research conducted by the insurance firm which, revealed that two-thirds of over-50s Brits plan to save money during the economic crisis by taking a caravanning holiday in the UK this year.
