According to figures released by Debenhams Wedding Insurance, the number of weddings cancelled has more than doubled in the past 12 months alone, but pre-nuptial nerves were the least of most couples' worries. The survey found that the biggest reason for calling off a wedding was in many cases down to relatives being too ill to attend, something that wedding day insurance is designed to protect. While wedding insurance will not cover a simple change of heart by the bride or groom, the results of Debenhams Wedding Insurance's survey suggests that there are plenty of reasons to take out wedding insurance nonetheless.
Wedding insurance claims made due to the cancellation or postponement of the big day accounted for 47.5 per cent of all claims dealt with by Debenhams Wedding Insurance during the 12 months to the end of September. That represented a massive jump on the previous year, when calling off the wedding accounted for just 22 per cent of claims made on wedding insurance, the report stated.
The second most common reason for claiming on the wedding day insurance was damage caused to the bride or groom's outfits, which accounted for 20 per cent of claims. Meanwhile, 2.5 per cent of wedding insurance claims were made by couples to pay for repairs after their guests had damaged a venue.
Wedding insurance can cover a whole host of problems that can cause financial loss to the bride and groom. This was demonstrated by the 15 per cent of wedding insurance claims that were made after suppliers went bankrupt or failed to deliver on time. A further five per cent were able to claim on their wedding day insurance after suffering problems with their cars.
