Homes at Risk as Britain Badly Prepared for Increasing Floods

22nd June, 2009

The Environment Agency has warned Britain is ill-prepared for flooding, with one in six homes currently at risk. This figure is set to rise as climate change takes it's toll - the agency calculates that an extra £1bn will be needed by 2035 to boost funding for projects that protect their communities from flooding.

The Environment Agency's report is based on data released by the government containing projections of climate damage to the UK; the report estimates that if the Britain does not prepare financially for the floods, the price could be £4bn worth of damage. Agency chairman Chris Smith said:

The latest UK climate data shows that the risk of flooding and coastal erosion will continue to increase in future due to rising sea levels and more frequent and heavy storms. There are important decisions for us all to take about how to manage these risks to protect people, communities, businesses and the economy in the future.

The projections released by the government concluded that increased rainfall would hit all areas of the UK, and by 2080 some regions would see an increase of 20%

The news will be especially worrying for those who have recently cancelled their home insurance to save money during the recession - a recent report from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) stated approximately 22% of homeowners had either cancelled or not renewed their home insurance in the last 12 months.
