Research revealed by Friends Provident has revealed that whilst men do worry about their health, nine out of ten are ill-prepared for the future, leaving themselves open to financial hardship by not having critical illness insurance in place.
High profile campaigns and celebrity cases of cancer means more men are aware of the risks of cancer, looking out for any suspicious moles - 56 percent of those questioned said they did this regularly, according to the research. However, nearly three-quarters admitted they did not know how to check for breast cancer - which occurs in men as well as women - and surprisingly 34 percent did not know how to check for testicular cancer.
Nearly a third of men questioned acknowledged they were concerned about their health while a further 27 percent occasionally worried about their health but balanced this out by making sure they spent time enjoying themselves.
The study also found that 53 percent thought they took risks with their finances also, and a worrying 90 percent did not have critical illness cover.
Mark Jones, head of protection at Friends Provident, said:
The research also highlighted that 30 percent of men avoid acknowledging any serious health problems in their immediate family and 17 percent do not know if there are any - just under a quarter revealed that if somebody close to them became seriously ill, it would make them take more notice of their own health.
