Horse insurance premiums could be set to fall for riders in Worcestershire who are protecting themselves against thieves using a new marking system.
SmartWater liquid is painted by horse owners onto saddles, bridles and other equipment, with the indelible fluid enabling identification to be made much easier. The protection should mean a drop in the price of horse insurance premiums.
The liquid is being by Worcestershire HorseWatch and is currently available to members at a discounted rate. It was developed by equine enthusiasts in a bid to cut down on the incidence of horse-related crime and in so doing cut the cost of horse insurance.
PC John McLaren, of SmartWater's South Worcestershire operation, said: "There are many horse owners and stables across Worcestershire and, although equine-related crime is relatively low in the county, we hope as many horse-owners as possible will buy a pack and keep it that way.
"It will mean if any of their property is stolen and recovered it can be traced directly back to them and simply using SmartWater can be enough to deter thieves altogether."
The product launch comes as more and more insurers are beginning to offer horse insurance. NFU Mutuals horse insurance offers vets cover for up to £2.5 million per incident. The companys horse insurance policyholders also benefit from standard personal liability cover of £2.5 million.
