Studies have revealed that millions of UK homeowners could be invalidating their home insurance by leaving their windows open during the warmer summer months.
A survey conducted by insurer Swinton found that 81 percent of 2,000 respondents were unaware that leaving windows open when out of the house could invalidate their home insurance policy. 72 percent of respondents admitted they had left at least one window open before going out within the last month. 23 percent of respondents said the main reason they leave windows open during the summer is to avoid leaving their pet home alone with no access to fresh air, in the hot weather.
Steve Chelton of Swinton said in an interview:
"Even though the hot weather makes us relaxed, we should not become complacent with the safety of our homes. At Swinton we advise everyone to ensure that their windows and doors are locked before leaving the house, even if just popping out for a few minutes."
"Failing to carry out these preventative measures could invalidate home insurance, which will leave people severely out of pocket if burgled."
If homeowners need to leave their windows open due to pets being left at home, they could consider placing bars on one window - perhaps at the back of the house - and designating it as the window they leave open when they leave home. That way, pets can get air during hot weather, but the home will be secure.
Homeowners are also urged to speak to their insurer regarding their policy on open windows. Most insurers will not cover burglaries on households where windows were left open but it differs from provider to provider. Homeowners should never assume they will automatically be covered by their insurance policy.
