According to studies, more than 10 percent of dogs and cats suffer from a medical condition before they are three years of age. Dogs alone are the worst affected, with 20 percent suffering from medical conditions such as dermatitis and lameness, before they are three. According to Sainsbury's Insurance figures, the average cost of treating a dog for lameness in its third year of life is about £322.
For this reason, pet owners are urged to secure an insurance policy for their pet at the time the pet is bought, as waiting can result in medical conditions being excluded from a policy.
Sainsbury's Pet Insurance Manager, Joanne Mallon, said in an interview:
Whilst the economic climate has driven many pet owners to cut their pet's insurance or to forego cover from the very beginning - insurance specialists are urging people to secure some form of cover, even if it's only a basic policy. If a pet should become ill or injured, uninsured costs could prove to be unmanageable - a circumstance that often sadly results in owners having to put their pets down. However, even a basic insurance policy could ensure pets get the treatment they need and save owners a great deal of money in the long run. There are also many competitive pet insurance deals on the market, enabling pet owners to find a plan and a price that fits their needs.
