Most of us enjoy a few drinks during our holidays and rightly so - but those drinks can add up. If you have an accident when drunk you might find your travel insurance won't cover your treatment.
Essential Travel, an online consumer travel website, has released further new research compiled from various travel insurance companies which show seven out of ten people are not aware that their travel insurance becomes invalid after a certain level of alcohol is consumed. This is in addition to their warning last month.
Out of those questioned, eight out of ten people admitted to drinking too much when they're enjoying their break.
The most common claims under travel insurance is for loss, damage or theft of personal items - if this was to happen whilst you are under the influence, your insurance company could refuse to payout.
Even if you are sober, but decide to take a trip on a moped or undertake another potentially hazardous activity, if you have an accident you could find you aren't covered under the terms of your travel insurance policy - this must be carefully checked before you go away to ensure you don't find yourself needing treatment with no insurance to pay for it.
It can cost up to £1000 a day for hospital treatment abroad - if you are found with too much alcohol in your blood when you are admitted, that could come out of your own pocket.
