According to Neil Greig, from Scotland's Institute of Advanced Motorists Trust (IAMT), almost one third of traffic collisions involve people who are working at the time, meaning commercial van insurance can provide important protection for businesses when one of their employees is involved in an accident. "Around 30 per cent of deaths and serous injuries take place when somebody is at work," Mr Greig explained to the Herald.
Mr Greig added that it is not simply businesses that employ van and lorry drivers that should consider the importance of taking out commercial van insurance, because many of the accidents that occur happen to "people in company cars and on company business in general". As a result of this widespread problem, the IAMT is now looking at new measures to help tackle the issue and help to reduce the cost of commercial van insurance premiums by reducing the number of accidents involving people driving while at work.
One potential option to help cut commercial vehicle insurance costs is to get employers to force their employees to take part in additional training, so that their drivers are less likely to be involved in collisions. Mr Greig said: "You can say to employers that if employees are being paid a mileage rate and representing a company then the company should be aware of what they are doing and of their standard of driving."
Commercial van insurance is usually offered by specialist insurance companies to provide cover that is more appropriately tailored to a business environment. There are a number of aspects to commercial vehicle insurance for businesses to consider, including breakdown insurance and carriage of goods.
