Tyresafe, a not-for-profit road safety organisation, has urged van drivers not to scrimp on buying the right tyres for their needs, despite the economic climate.
Instead, van drivers should ensure they purchase tyres which are right for their model in order to avoid excessive wear and tear. According to Stuart Jackson, Tyresafe chairman, the wrong tyres contribute to damaging vehicles and creating unavoidable effects like sidewall cracking.
The effects of buying cheaper tyres rather than the recommended type for vehicle could have far-reaching effects. For starters, any accidents caused by tyre wear and tear and related vehicle damage could cause an accident that may result in injury or at worst, death.
Many van drivers also rely on their vehicle for employment purposes and an accident could leave them without a van and therefore out of work. In addition, such incidents could mean higher van insurance premiums the next time a policy is renewed.
In May, Tyresafe revealed that it had achieved a record level of interest in its organisation, with April 2009 seeing 26,700 website visits - a 185 percent rise on the same figures from last year.
Mr Jackson said: "I'm delighted that a growing number of people are actively choosing to inform themselves about tyre safety.
"We see this as a direct result of our constant focus on providing accurate and relevant advice to motorists and bikers, as we strive to become the UK's first point of reference for tyre safety issues."
Earlier this year, the Department of Transport revealed plans to give local councils more power to reduce speed limits, as part of its safety initiative to cut the number of deaths on British roads by one third before 2020.
